As we introduce Auslan in 2025, here is some information about the language.
Auslan is the language of the Deaf community of Australia and belongs to the British, Australian and New Zealand Sign Language family.
It is a distinct and legitimate language with its own grammar and vocabulary which are different from those of English.
Fingerspelling, or using your hands to represent the letters of the alphabet is an important part of Auslan. This is used for names of people, titles of movies and books, brands of cars, food, appliances etc.
Key Word Sign is not Auslan. Key Word Sign borrows signs from Auslan.
Auslan has 2 main dialects, Northern (used in New South Wales and Queensland) and Southern dialects (used in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania).
