The Moolap Primary School Instructional Model for English follows an evidence-based literacy approach. This structured approach provides students with a strong foundation in reading and writing.
The Reading approach contains the five essential elements of reading:
✅ Phonemic awareness
✅ Phonics instruction
✅ Fluency practice
✅ Development of vocabulary and comprehension
Students in Prep to Year 2 classes are taught explicitly using the Little Learners Love Literacy reading approach, which involves systematic instruction every day. Our teachers are trained to deliver this approach. The building blocks for writing are taught within the English block, including a focus on handwriting skills. Lessons follow a carefully planned structure and provide opportunities for students to learn the author’s craft when creating written pieces, using high quality ‘mentor texts’. There is a strong connection between the reading and writing programs.
The Reading approach for Year 3-6 classes follows a similar structure: planned phonics lessons, fluency practice and further development of vocabulary and comprehension skills. Students are also exposed to a range of texts and conduct text studies to interpret and analyse a range of material by different authors and have ongoing opportunities to share and discuss their reading with others. Students are taught to spell using the Spelling Mastery approach. The approach provides structured lessons where students learn and practise key spelling strategies. Students further develop and extend their writing skills and are exposed to different purposes and types of writing. Handwriting is also a feature of the English approach.
All lessons in English follow the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 guidelines.
We believe that strong literacy skills are the foundation of lifelong learning. Our comprehensive literacy program is designed to support students at every stage of their reading, writing, and spelling development, ensuring they become confident and capable communicators.
